City Life Forms (Beautiful Mutations)

A city is parched, dry, stiff, as well as cold. But we can nevertheless deny that we are accustomed to the environment that a city provides, in spite of the fact that mother nature that prolongs our lives is actually the provider. We live in a place where we find comfort and peace from places surrounded by concrete and cement, rather than earth and grass. One cannot deny the comfort that artificial objects the urban dwellers have created to provide, as they continue their lives, albeit limited and confined, compared to the undefinable and uncontrollable infiniteness of mother nature. I quickly captured the forms and images of the artificial objects that have been formed as such. And I’ve named the vitality from these inorganic elements, the ‘City Life Forms’.
Recently, I’ve made countless visits to alleys and redevelopment sites not only in Seoul but around the country. I stood at the point in between the beginning and the end of the transformations while trying to observe the process. In this observation I began to recognize a city, which constantly changes itself and develops, as an organic body that has its own life. All sundries of the city collapse into chaos. And I observed as they disappear and regenerate. The images that inspired me also went through the process of breakdowns or shattering, mixing with heterogeneous elements, eventually simplifying to their final forms. That’s how the ‘City Life Forms’ are created, through the process of geometrical transformations, continuously evolving in the form of metamorphosis. I call this the ‘beautiful mutations’. While the term ‘mutation’ may strike one to think of strange, ugly, and atrocious things; however, the things that I discovered and observed came to me as more than friendly, adorable, and ecstatic. Just like the metamorphosing process, I continuously doodle their images and forms in my doodling book, mixing them to create new forms. By assigning harmonious colors to the constantly evolving mutations, which ceaselessly proliferate and regenerate, I return them to their origin: the city. Just like a painting on a rough and coarse wall, I bring the essence of the city and the streets onto my canvas. I paint the basic, however sophisticated, the beautiful picture of the City Life Forms.
